The Foundation of Truth
In a culture overwhelmed by subjective truth and endless argumentation, the believer requires an immovable standard. God has not left us to navigate the chaos of shifting opinions. He has provided a concrete, structural mechanism for establishing truth and defending against falsehood: the Witness Principle.
The Principle Established
From the foundational laws given to Israel to the governing instructions of the New Testament Church, the standard remains unbroken. God demands multiple witnesses to establish any matter.
A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing or sin against a man, regardless of what offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. (Deuteronomy 19:15)
The Protection Against Retaliation
We stick strictly to the requirement of two or more witnesses as proof against retaliation against clear truth. A single voice can be easily dismissed, twisted, or accused of personal bias. A lone witness is vulnerable to the attacks of those who hate the truth.
However, when a matter is established by two or three witnesses, the testimony is locked. It ceases to be one man's opinion and becomes established fact before God and the assembly.
But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ (Matthew 18:16)
This is the third time I am coming to you. ‘Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ (2 Corinthians 13:1)
Practical Application
In Theology: Never build a doctrine on a single, isolated verse. Demand the testimony of two or three witnesses from Scripture.
In Conflict: Do not receive an accusation against an elder or a brother based on a solitary voice. Demand multiple witnesses.
In Defense: When declaring hard truths to a rebellious culture, stand behind the plurality of God's Word. Let the Scripture bear witness with itself.
The Witness Method is not a mere suggestion; it is the divine architecture for safeguarding truth and ensuring justice.
