Returning to the Ancient Foundations

The modern church is fundamentally broken because it has rejected the ancient foundations of God's order. We see the symptoms everywhere: broken marriages, rebellious children, and a culture that openly mocks the Creator. Yet, the diagnosis is simple. We have refused to submit to the hierarchy established in the Garden of Eden. The cure is equally simple but entirely offensive to the modern mind. We must return to the divine structure. We must submit to God's authority. Only then will we thrive.

The Apostle James provides the blueprint for this return in James 4:7. He writes, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." The command here is explicitly militaristic. The Greek word for submit, hypotasso, means to arrange oneself under the command of a leader. It is a tactical alignment. To submit to God is to take your assigned place in His cosmic army. It is only from this position of submission that you have the authority to "resist the devil." If you step out of rank, if you reject the hierarchy God has established, you lose your spiritual covering. The devil does not flee from autonomous individuals; he flees from those who are perfectly aligned under the ultimate Headship of Christ. When men and women refuse to occupy their proper stations, they are fighting a spiritual war without armor.

This concept of returning to order is echoed prophetically in Isaiah 58:12. The prophet declares, "Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins; you will restore the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of the Streets of Dwelling." The "ancient ruins" are not merely physical buildings. They represent the foundational structures of human society, beginning with the patriarchal order established in Genesis. To repair the breach is to restore the boundaries of authority that have been torn down by centuries of egalitarian rebellion. God's design is the "age-old foundation." When we abandon it, the house collapses. When we restore it, we create a dwelling place where families and churches can flourish under divine protection. A culture that despises the father's rule is a culture living in ruins, pretending the rubble is a palace.

Finally, the Apostle Peter confirms that this order requires profound humility. In 1 Peter 5:5, he commands, "Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" The operative phrase here is "God opposes the proud." The Greek word antitassetai means to set oneself in battle array against. When a wife refuses to submit to her husband, or a husband refuses to submit to Christ, they are not merely making a cultural choice. They are committing an act of pride that places them in direct military opposition to God Himself. God actively fights against those who subvert His hierarchy. But He gives grace, the power to function and thrive, to those who humbly accept their place in the chain of command. The egalitarian demands for sameness are the very definition of the pride that God stands against.

The Universal Principle of Derived Authority

The doctrine of submission is not a relic of a bygone era. It is the very mechanism of spiritual survival. The universe operates on a principle of derived authority. The Father is the head of Christ. Christ is the head of man. Man is the head of woman. This is the Father's Chain of Headship. To break any link in this chain is to invite the chaos of the Fall into our lives. When we ignore this chain, we operate outside of the bounds of orthodox biblical theology.

We must understand that submission is not synonymous with inferiority. This is the great lie of modern egalitarianism. They argue that if a woman must submit to a man, she must be of lesser value. This is a direct attack on the nature of the Trinity. Christ submits to the Father, yet He is fully God, co-equal in essence and glory. If submission implies inferiority, then the Trinity collapses. Therefore, a wife's submission to her husband is not a mark of degradation. It is a reflection of the divine nature. She is ontologically equal to her husband, sharing the exact same value as an image-bearer of God, yet she is positionally subordinate to him in function and rank. Equality of worth does not demand equality of authority. The husband has total structural authority.

The tragedy of the Fall, as described in Genesis 3, was an inversion of this order. Adam's sin was not passivity. He was not merely standing by while Eve was deceived. Adam actively and willingly rebelled against the direct command of God. He listened to the voice of his wife over the voice of his Creator. He abdicated his position as the federal head and submitted to the one who was designed to be his helper. This was cosmic treason. The curse that followed was the natural consequence of this inversion. Adam was not tricked; he made a conscious choice to follow his wife rather than lead her in obedience to the Lord. We must never teach that Adam failed simply by being quiet. He failed by actively disobeying the command given directly to him.

Today, the church attempts to manage the symptoms of this curse through "soft-complementarianism." This compromised theology tries to appease modern sensibilities by affirming male headship in the church while quietly endorsing egalitarian partnerships in the home. But God's order cannot be compartmentalized. A man cannot be the head of his wife only on Sundays. He is her head at all times and in all spheres. To deny this is to deny the physical reality of creation. Woman was taken from man, and she was created for man. She is his glory. When we embrace this profound truth, we step out of the chaos of rebellion and into the harmonious order of God's design. The church must reject the cowardly middle ground that attempts to please both the culture and the Creator. You cannot serve two masters.

Furthermore, we must reject the notion of horizontal appeasement. A man is accountable to God first and foremost. When he fails, his primary repentance is directed vertically to his Creator, not horizontally to his wife. He is the head. He must bear the weight of responsibility. He does not seek counsel from his wife regarding his deep spiritual burdens; he seeks God and the counsel of godly men. His wife is his ezer, his helper, who encourages him and reminds him of God's word, but she is not equipped or designed to carry the weight of his office. To force her into that role is to crush her under a burden she was never meant to bear. A man must stand before God as the responsible party, absorbing the full weight of his office.

Practical Application

  • Repentance from Autonomy: The first step in returning to God's order is acknowledging our rebellion. Wives must repent of their desire to control or usurp their husbands. Husbands must repent of their abdication and their fear of leading. We must view autonomy not as a virtue, but as the essence of sin. We must embrace the reality that we are created to function within a hierarchy, and true freedom is found only when we submit to the parameters God has drawn.

  • Tactical Alignment in the Home: Husbands must take up the mantle of authority. This means establishing the spiritual direction of the household, leading in prayer, and enforcing God's standards. Wives must actively arrange themselves under this leadership, offering their strength and industry to build their husband's house, not their own independent empires. The home must become a fortress of order that actively resists the chaos of the world outside its doors.

  • Humility as a Weapon: When conflict arises, our default response must be humility, not self-defense. We must remember that God opposes the proud. By clothing ourselves in humility, we disarm the enemy and invite the grace of God to flow through our marriages and our churches. Pride demands equality of outcome; humility accepts the glory of assigned function.

  • Rejecting Soft-Complementarianism: We must eradicate the compromised theology of egalitarian partnerships from our minds. A marriage is a monarchy under the rule of Christ, with the husband serving as the appointed head. We must boldly teach and practice this reality, refusing to apologize for the structure God has ordained. We cannot be ashamed of the Apostle Paul or the creation narrative in Genesis. We must declare it boldly.

  • Restoring the Burden of Leadership: Men must stop seeking emotional refuge in their wives. When a man faces spiritual warfare or moral failure, he must take it to God and to his brothers. He must protect his wife from the heavy burdens of his office, allowing her to flourish as a helper rather than expecting her to act as his counselor or savior.
