Dispatch 003: The Duty of the Gatekeeper

The gates are open

THE BREACH

A wall defines a space, but a gate controls it. If the gate is left open, the wall is useless.

In the time of Nehemiah, the physical walls were rebuilt, but the spiritual integrity of the city was under attack. Merchants and traders were entering Jerusalem on the Sabbath, bringing their wares and noise into the sanctuary of rest. They turned the holy city into a marketplace.

Nehemiah understood that passive leadership would destroy the people. He did not ask the merchants to leave; he forced them out.

THE ACTION

His response was decisive and physical.

“I commanded that the gates... be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates..” (Nehemiah 13:19)

He established a filter. He determined what was allowed to enter and what was forbidden.

THE MODERN APPLICATION

Every father is the Nehemiah of his home. You are the gatekeeper.

The modern world seeks to bring its "wares" into your home twenty-four hours a day. Through screens, devices, and entertainment, the culture demands access to the minds of your children. It wants to turn your sanctuary into a marketplace of ideas that despise God.

If you leave the gates open, you are not being "tolerant." You are being negligent.

THE MANDATE

You have the authority to shut the gate.

• You have the authority to say "No" to influences that corrupt your family.

• You have the authority to block the digital signals that bring chaos into your living room.

• You have the authority to post a guard.

Order requires exclusion. Peace requires a perimeter. Do not apologize for locking the doors.

“..There were guards stationed at every watch” (1 Chronicles 26:16)

Stand your watch.
