The Household of God and the Order of the Ages

The restoration of the church and its mission to the nations depends entirely on the recovery of the "Forgotten Order." A church that reflects the chaos of the culture cannot convert the culture. Scripture reveals that the Church is the "household of God," structured by divine conduct rather than human preference. The credibility of the Word of God is tethered to the order of our families. We must rebuild the internal structure of headship and submission so that the body may grow and the truth may stand firm.

The Apostle Paul lays the architectural foundation in 1 Timothy 3:15. He writes, "in case I am delayed, so that you will know how each one must conduct himself in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth." The church is not a volunteer organization; it is a household. As a household, it is governed by the rules of the Father, not the votes of the members. Paul's use of "conduct" indicates that behavior within the church is strictly prescribed. It is not left to cultural whims or pragmatic innovation. This conduct includes the qualifications for elders, which are rooted in the management of their own homes. The structure of the church must mirror the structure of the creation order. If the church collapses into egalitarianism, it ceases to function as the "pillar and foundation of the truth," because it no longer holds high the unchangeable order of God.

This connection between domestic order and public witness is explicitly forged in Titus 2:5. Paul instructs older women to train the younger women "to be self-controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be discredited." The stakes are terrifyingly high. The Greek word for "discredited" means to be blasphemed or spoken against. When Christian wives reject the headship of their husbands, or when Christian homes are chaotic and ungoverned, the outside world blasphemes the Word of God. They conclude that the Gospel has no power to order life. Our rebellion gives the enemy ammunition. Conversely, a home operating according to God's hierarchy is a fortress of peace. It is an irrefutable apologetic for the Lordship of Christ. The future church will win the world not by mimicking its feminism, but by presenting the stark contrast of biblical order.

Finally, Ephesians 4:16 reveals the mechanics of how this ordered body grows. Paul writes, "From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love through the work of each individual part." Order is the mechanism of organic growth. A ligament connects bone to bone, providing stability and allowing movement. In the body of Christ, these ligaments represent the relationships of authority and submission: pastors and people, husbands and wives, parents and children. If the ligaments are severed or loose, the body becomes spastic and paralyzed. It cannot move. An egalitarian body is a disjointed body. It cannot function because the parts refuse to align. Growth occurs only "through the work of each individual part," meaning each part must accept its God-given station.

Safeguarding the Pulpit and the Witness of the Church

The vision for the future church is not an evolution forward into progressive ideals, but a return backward to apostolic foundations. The church is the family of God, and its structure must reflect the nature of its Head. The modern attempt to decouple church polity from the order of creation is a profound theological error. You cannot have the life of the body without the structure of the skeleton. When you remove the hierarchy, you do not get freedom; you get a heap of bones.

The doctrine of male headship and female submission is the heartbeat of a healthy church and society. Those who reject it do not march toward progress, but drift toward ancient heresies. Historically, movements that elevated women into authoritative roles over men, such as Montanism and Gnosticism, were driven by a rejection of the physical creation order and an elevation of subjective spiritual experience. The orthodox church suppressed these movements because they understood that teaching doctrine is an exercise of authority restricted to men. To tolerate the usurpation of this office is to tolerate the spirit of Jezebel, a sin for which Christ Himself threatened severe judgment.

Furthermore, the spiritual equality of believers in Christ does not dissolve the functional hierarchy established in creation. Galatians 3:28 describes our inheritance in heaven, while 1 Timothy 2:12 describes our duty on earth. Confusing the two leads to chaos. Equality of essence does not necessitate sameness of function. The President and a citizen are equal in humanity, but distinct in authority. The husband and wife are equal in grace, but distinct in authority. The future church must boldly maintain this distinction. We must celebrate the gifts of women in evangelism, discipleship of other women, and domestic management, while rigorously protecting the pulpit and the office of elder for qualified men.

To preach this doctrine requires courage. It costs nothing to preach what the culture applauds. The test of a faithful teacher is whether he will say what God says when the world, and the compromised church, is screaming for him to stop. Silence is not neutral. When the Bible speaks clearly and the pulpit stays quiet, the silence is a lie. It tells the people that God does not care about how they order their lives. The future church must raise up watchmen who will not shrink back from declaring the whole counsel of God, fully aware that obedience to God's order is the only shelter from His impending judgment.

Practical Application

  • Defending the Pulpit: The local church must ensure that the authoritative teaching of doctrine to the gathered assembly is strictly reserved for qualified men. We must reject the modern trend of "co-preaching" husband-wife teams, which violates the creation order by placing a woman in a position of authority over men. The pulpit is not a place for egalitarian experimentation.

  • Cultivating Domestic Management: The church must elevate the role of the homemaker as a high and holy calling. Older women must actively mentor younger women in the practical skills of domestic management and the spiritual virtue of submission. We must reject the feminist narrative that career advancement is superior to building a household for the glory of God.

  • Embracing the Apologetic of Order: Christian families must realize that their internal dynamic is a public witness. We must strive to present to the world homes characterized by strong, loving male leadership and joyful, reverent female submission. This visible harmony is our greatest weapon against the chaos of the culture. When our homes work, the world takes notice.

  • Courageous Proclamation: Pastors and elders must repent of the fear of man and begin preaching clearly on biblical gender roles. We must stop apologizing for God's design. We must systematically teach the biblical basis for headship and submission, equipping the congregation to withstand the cultural assault and tearing down the strongholds of feminist ideology within the pews.
